Our Little Cheerio Man

I gave in to letting Matthew try cheerios last week after Kate's mom said she had tried them. I was holding off because of the first-time-what-if-he-chokes syndrome.
So, since last week, cheerios have become a main staple in all our diets.
They are very handy to give him when he's waiting for his supper in his high chair. They work when you have to go out somewhere and he's getting fussy. And they work for me when I realize at 3 that I haven't eaten since this morning.

We were talking in Matthew's class this morning about who's eating what and it seems like a lot of the babies around his age are a lot further along in the solids game than we are. I need to get up more courage to give him different things. So far, he hasn't started to choke on anything yet.

He's becoming a little eating machine in general too. He'll polish off an entire bowl of cereal, half a jar of fruit, some cheerios and maybe even some yogurt for breakfast!

He has pulled himself up on both his piano and his toybench by himself. He's only done it twice though and seems to have lost interest in the game since he figured it out.

Today, while I was doing situps in the living room, and Matthew was standing by the toybox, he actually let go and stood for about 2 seconds on his own. It was long enough for me to see him let go... realize that "oh my gosh, he isn't holding onto anything".. and then watch him fall on his bum just as I reach for him!

He's currently not interested in very many toys. More so - how to open the drawer on the stove... what's in the garbage can... how to climb up onto the dishwasher when Mommy is loading dishes onto it... how to get in the fridge/freezer if Mommy opens it... How to climb through the chair rails and the ever popular.... how to open the central vac connection.

Although... after about a week of "ta ta" and firm "no, danger"... we have gone from looking at me and laughing hysterically to now backing away as soon as I say the word. Phew, I was getting worried there for a while.

Other than that, life is good, despite how cold it is. Can't complain though... Last Saturday it was gorgeous all day and we even got to bbq!

Talk to you soon.

The Sleep Sack

A few days ago, I bought Matthew a sleep sack. If you've never heard of this, it's kind of like a baby sleeping bag.

They're not cheap ($55), but I gave in because I was tired of coming in at all hours of the night and seeing Matthew huddled in the corner without any covers on.

So, we've tried the sleep sack for a few nights and a few naps now and he seems to really like it.

The only thing is that I can't get it into my head that he's actually warm and doesn't need many more covers!

Every time I've gotten him up in the morning or from a nap, his toes are warm and his body is much warmer than it used to be when he was sleeping without covers!

He still goes to sleep with this blankie, which covers up his arms and I usually cover all of him up with this. But, I still keep feeling like he needs more covers!
I feel weird not putting him under a quilt and then going and crawling under a quilt myself!

This morning, he was very warm in his sleeping bag and I've also noticed his sleeping position changing a bit. It used to be automatically on his tummy, curled up, but now he's sleeping again on his back with his arms sprawled out most of the night. So, I guess the sleep sack must be a good investment after all!

Same Old, Same Old

Hi everyone, it's me, Matthew, blogging today.
Not much to tell you... It's been really cold here for the last few days so Mommy has made me stay home most of the time. We can't go for any walks and she made me stay home on the weekend when she went for groceries. I didn't mind though, because Daddy and I were watching the football game on TV. It looked a lot colder there than here!

Today I had a visit with Dr. Patti. She says I'm doing great! Nothing out of the ordinary.

Then, Mommy took me to the mall because we had to return one of my Christmas presents. It was the bowling set that Mommy bought me. I didn't like it too much, so Mommy said she's going to by me a sleeping bag instead because I always kick off all of my covers.

We went to Market Mall. It's my favourite mall, because they have really cool diaper change stations. Everyone gets their own station complete with a sink and cool lights to look at. And... when you yell loud, it sounds REALLY loud in there!

Then Mommy heated up some of my baby food for lunch. Not fair! She was having Pizza. How come I had to eat mushed up carrots and peas???? She gave me a few little nibbles of pizza though. And, I got to have a few sips of apple juice. That's a big treat for me!

Then we went to return my toy. Mommy was going to leave then, but I fell asleep in my stroller, so Mommy figured she'd better keep shopping so that I got my nap in.

I slept for about a half hour or so. In that time, Mommy managed to buy me 3 shirts, one toque/scarf thingy and a wetsuit. A wetsuit?? What the heck is that? Mommy says I will get to wear it when we go swimming and when we play in the lake this summer. It's UV protected, whatever that means. Mommy says I will look like a little surfer dude!

Tomorrow, I get to go and see my friends at our class. I can't wait!

Talk to you soon!

Love,
Matthew

8 months and counting

huh... I completely forgot to post Matthew's 8 month picture. Actually, I completely forgot to take the picture until 2 days ago. Now, I'm being slow at adding it. It'll be here soon, I promise.

Matthew is doing well. He's now the master of getting himself into every single corner of the house. He's still doing the "military crawl", or actually, to me, it looks like he's trying to swim because he kind of goes "right arm, then right knee, then left arm, then left knee" instead of both arms and legs at the same time. Surpisingly though, he can make it from the living room to the kitchen in about 10 seconds!

He's learned how to sit himself back up when he wants to. The first day he did this, I thought I was going crazy. I knew I had just turned around and saw him crawling to the kitchen and then when I turned around he was sitting! Then crawling... then sitting!

Now, when he doesn't want to have a nap, he just sits up! He's also trying to pull himself up on things, but (thankfully) doesn't quite have the strength to do it just yet.

I just want him to be a baby for a little while longer.... tonight he fell asleep about 6:45 after having a bottle. He was pooped because we had to take him out to run some errands with us this afternoon and his last nap had ended at 1pm. He even missed cereal tonight. Anyhow, I just let him sleep in my lap for a good while as I watched tv because it's already seeming like few and far between where he actually wants to sit and cuddle for more than 2 minutes.

I was driving to the mall today to buy Matthew more sleepers. I just bought him 6 - 18 month sleepers about a month ago and yes, you guessed it, they're already getting tight in the crotch. When I first bought them, he was swimming in them. I thought for sure they'd last the rest of the winter. So, there was a sale on my favourite ones... I bought 8 sleepers for $31. Now, you can't beat that!

Anyways, as I was driving, I heard a song on the radio that I hadn't heard before. It's called "you're gonna miss this" by Trace Adkins. I think it's a good song to keep in the CD player for those days when you're pulling your hair out!

Here's a snipit:

Five years later there's a plumber workin' on the water heater
Dog's barkin', phone's ringin'
One kid's cryin', one kid's screamin'
She keeps apologizin'
He says "They don't bother me.
I've got 2 babies of my own.
One's 36, one's 23.
Huh, it's hard to believe, but ...

You're gonna miss this
You're gonna want this back
You're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you're gonna miss this

our Day at the Park

I'm a bit behind blogging this, but the computer hasn't been my best friend these last few days.
On Sunday, we had a Chinook and it got up to 10 degrees at our house, so Matthew and I went for a long walk!
We made it to the park and Matthew took his first turn all by himself in the baby swing! At first, he got this huge smile on his face, kind of like "why didn't you show me this thing before!"... but after a few minutes of swinging.. all of a sudden he stopped smiling, the lip started to come out..... but Mommy rescued him before it became an all out cry!

My Shopping Trip

Hi Everybody, It's me, Matthew, blogging today!

Today, Mommy took me grocery shopping. I know, you're thinking, "so, what's the big deal?". Well! Mommy got me out of my carseat and carried me into the store and I figured I'd have to be carried around as usual.

BUT.... this time, Mommy finally got up the courage to let me ride in the shopping cart!!! Mommy says that we can only do this at Sobey's until I'm bigger because they have very good seatbelts in their carts and none of the other stores do. (Mommy note: and the handles can also be sanitized before we go in ;o)

It was so much fun!! I could see everything!!! I kept trying to tell Mommy that I liked to look at the big lights in the ceiling. I would put my hand up and say "ehh"... I was trying to tell Mommy to look at them too!

When Mommy was buying fruits, I could reach out and touch the bag as she put the grapes in! It was sooo exciting! And all of the nice ladies in the store smiled at me and said hello to me! I like to smile back at people. Yesterday, there was a funny man eating a hot dog at Costco. I thought he was silly, so I laughed out loud when he said hi to me!

I think I am going to want to go grocery shopping every day! The bestest part ever though, was when we got to ride in the cart back to the car because the road made the cart go bump, bump, bump, bump... this was soooo funny I couldn't stop giggling :O)

p.s. Mommy note: Just in case you were wondering... I knew I would jinx myself when I wrote about Matthew's new nap schedule... We're now back on the 45 min schedule...

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

So you might remember my little experiment on New Years Eve that didn't go so well? Remember the little boy who never wanted to nap?

Well, I stuck with the books advice and kept putting Matthew to bed VERY early for a few nights. We're talking he was bathed and in bed by 6:30 or 7 at the latest. And you know what? Most nights he slept right through from that time on.

Then voila! One day, he started napping! Now, for the past week, he has consistently napped almost 2 hours in the morning and anywhere from 1-2 hours in the afternoon.

Wonderful, you must be thinking!

So, now, here I sit, writing this blog at 9:30 p.m. and my dear little boy is singing away in his crib to the music of his mobile. He ain't tired. He not want to go to bed!

What have I done!?!?!?

At least he's not screaming (yet).... he's just happily amusing himself by singing away in the dark!

Oh, just heard a big sigh... you know, the type when you're really bored and you can't fall asleep!

So what's better? The kid who naps in the afternoon, or the one who used to go to bed at 8pm? I'm starting to think maybe the boy who didn't nap wasn't so bad after all!

Thank Goodness we still have Raffi

Yesterday, I put in a Raffi CD for Matthew. I was surprised at how he immediately turned his head towards the CD player to listen and continued to do so throughout the CD. I don't think he's ever responded to any other CD's that way. We had fun listening to all of the songs which Mommy must have forgotten somewhere along the way, but seemed to now remember by heart!

My favourite: 5 little ducks went out one day, over the hills and far away, Mother duck said "quack, quack, quack quack"... but only 4 little ducks came back..... and on and on... (eventually they do all come back ;o)

Raffi has really stood the test of time. As I looked at the CD cover, it was originally recorded in 1977! Raffi for me is like the Friendly Giant to my parents. The friendly giant was still around when I was little and he was also on when they were little.

Too bad we don't still have Mr. Dressup. I was a Mr. Dressup girl. Never missed a day (I don't think).... and still would probably be scared of the owl (toowit, toowoo!)

My Adventures Today

Hi everyone, it's me, Matthew, blogging today.

Today, I discovered that Mommy keeps a bowl of water on the floor in the kitchen with a water fall in it! I crawled all the way from the living room where I was playing with my toys to the bowl to see if I could touch it! Guess what! I got there before Mommy got to me! he he!

Then I heard Mommy say to the kitties... "sorry guys, but I have to move your dish to the bathroom now!"

Mommy says tomorrow we are going shopping for cat doors. Mommy said that she was going to put a gate up so that I couldn't get near the basement door, but she changed her mind back to the cat doors instead.

Later on in the afteroon, Mommy and I were playing in my room after my nap. I crawled all the way under the table to play with the register. I love playing with those things! They are fun to smack with your hand!

Then, I discovered that my kitty likes to sit on my window sill. If I reach up way, way high up, I can almost grab his tail! I wanted to see why the kitty was sitting on the window sill, so I whined until Mommy let me stand by the window. I can juusssst about see out the window but not quite.. Mommy says in a few months I will be big enough and tall enough to stand by the window myself.

Tonight, Mommy and Daddy took me to see something called zoolights. It was pretty fun, although, I think I would have rather just stayed home and played with my toys. Mommy says maybe next year I will have more fun. I did get to see a 10 foot tall giraffe that was made of lights! It was pretty cool!

Talk to you soon!

Love,
Matthew

What I learned Today....

Hi everyone, it's me, Matthew, blogging today. I am learning new things all the time! I will try and let you know whenever Mommy lets me get on the computer.
Today, I learned 2 things.

First, I learned that there are these things mommy calls "registers" in our house. They are very far away and underneath a table and you have to crawl all the way across the room to get to it, but when you do, it can entertain you for a long time if you poke your fingers in the slots and try to pull it out of the rug!

Next, I learned that in the bathtub, if you smack your hand down on the water really hard, it makes big splashes and it gets both Mommy and me wet! That was lots of fun!

That's it for today... time for me to go to bed!

Love,
Matthew

Another new tooth!

This marks #4!

Two on the top and two on the bottom.... yikes! Matthew can really bite now!

We're having a bit of grief over it today, but nothing tylenol, a blankie and Sesame Street on TV can't handle ;o)

p.s. I promise to get the Christmas pictures up before Ukrainian Christmas is over....

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone!
Ours was a pretty quite one. I did have this big, fancy plan that Matthew was going to sleep all evening and we'd enjoy a nice supper and movie, but Matthew had other plans.......

I am still struggling with the baby who only sleeps for 45 minutes at a time! (well, except for at night, he's an awesome sleeper there). Anyhow, I am reading a book that says one of two things a) some babies will only ever sleep that long during the day, so deal with it or b) even if they're going to bed at 7pm, they still might not be getting enough sleep at night and are over tired. The book suggests they go to bed at 5:30 pm until they nap better.

I thought I'd give plan b) a try since a) didn't seem like much fun!

Yesterday, Matthew didn't want to nap at all in the afternoon, so I thought it an even better chance. I didn't let him have his 4pm nap. Fed him, bathed him, fed him again, bottled him and had him in his crib at 5:30 p.m. He went right ot sleep! I went downstairs and started making our New Years eve supper! I cleaned up a bit and even lit the fire place.

"this is too easy!", I thought as I sat in the living room waiting for Darren to get home from work! Darren got home and we started to enjoy our dinner.

About 6:45, you know who decided he wanted to join the party! So much for going to bed early! So, now he was up, wasn't hungry, had been bathed and had a bottle, so all there was left to do was play!

7:45 and he's still up! (now we're croaching in on the real bed time)... no sign of sleepiness yet.

8:15... ok, you're going to bed whether you like it or not!

8:30... Matthew wins again... come watch TV with Mommy and Daddy.

I think he finally went to sleep somewhere after 9pm by which time I'd had enough of our New Years party as well and declared I was getting ready for bed.

10:15 p.m. Lights out in our house... boy we're party animals!

11:00 p.m. Listen to somebody having quite a good time out in the street. Fall asleep.

12:15 a.m. Phone rings... after just falling asleep I wake up in disarray. Someone is calling our fax. For crying out loud! Oh well..... Hey, Honey, we missed New Years.... Happy New Year! Now go back to sleep....
